Renewable energies in primary and secondary education classrooms with PLOCAN and the Regional Ministry of Education

The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) participated in the environmental issues of the GLOBE Educational Research Project giving a two-session online training workshop to teachers from the participating schools and providing them with renewable energy kits, within its educational programme and the framework of the EDUROVs “Educational underwater robotics” project.

The training received and the kits provided by PLOCAN will allow teachers to carry out experiments related to wind energy, solar photovoltaic energy and hydrogen fuel cells in their classrooms.

The main objective of the EDUROVs “Educational Underwater Robotics” project is to introduce primary and secondary education students to technologies from a practical and amusing point of view. EDUROVs is financed by the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo (Island Government) of Gran Canaria and the “La Caixa” Foundation.

The GLOBE Educational Research Project is promoted by the Programme for the Promotion of Scientific Vocations and Creativity (STEAM) and the Environmental Education Programme of the Directorate-General for Management, Innovation and Quality (DGOIC) of the Department of Education, Universities, Culture and Sport (CEUCD) of the Government of the Canary Islands.

The promotion of the rigor of the scientific method among the students of the Canary Islands to help the scientific understanding and the support and improvement of the environment of the Earth system from a local, regional and global scale, and the promotion of the multidisciplinary nature of the Sciences are outstanding objectives of GLOBE. Moreover, it aims to improve the understanding of the environment as a global system by taking advantage of the potential of environmental education and experimentation in nearby environments.

The GLOBE educational project aims to acquire the necessary skills of analysis and reflection on the current environmental situation, in order to provide a global perception of the problems, developing an opinion on the causes and actively participating in the search for solutions to the closest and most well-known problems. Furthermore, it enables the joint work and the exchange of experiences of those centres interested in educational innovation through environmental education.
