The headquarters of PLOCAN hosted the 2nd Junior Marine Congress of the EduBlue: Blue Emissions and Sounds project, an educational initiative designed to introduce secondary school students to marine science, sustainability, and ocean renewable energies through hands-on experiences and STEM-based activities.
The event brought together students participating in the project, who presented the scientific posters they had developed throughout the academic year as a result of their research and learning on topics related to marine biodiversity, polluting emissions, underwater noise, and technologies linked to marine renewable energy.
This year’s edition featured 11 groups from different schools across Gran Canaria, involving a total of 33 students. Following the first phase of the congress, the finalist teams included one group from IES Tamogante, two groups from Cooperativa de Enseñanza Juan Ramón Jiménez, one group from IES Doramas, and one group from IES Arucas Domingo Rivero.
The congress was organised in two distinct phases. During the first stage, students took part in a rapid-fire presentation round, briefly presenting and defending their scientific posters while sharing the key findings and conclusions of their work in a dynamic format. The finalist posters then advanced to a second phase, in which their authors delivered a more detailed presentation before an expert panel responsible for evaluating the scientific quality, communication skills, and originality of the projects.
First prize was awarded to the group from IES Arucas Domingo Rivero for their scientific poster “Green Hydrogen: Clean Energy to Protect the Future of the Planet”. Second prize went to a group from IES Doramas for their project “Tourism in the Canary Islands and CO2: Can Tourism in the Canary Islands Influence Global CO2 Emissions?”. Third prize was awarded to one of the groups from Cooperativa de Enseñanza Juan Ramón Jiménez for their scientific poster “Hydrogen in the Canary Islands”.
The initiative aimed to encourage scientific outreach among young people, inspire interest in science and technology careers, and promote greater awareness of the need to protect marine ecosystems and understand the impact of human activity on the ocean.
Through initiatives such as EduBlue, PLOCAN continues to strengthen its commitment to environmental education and the promotion of scientific knowledge among younger generations, connecting marine research with the educational community and bringing science closer to society from an early age.
