The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) reaffirms its commitment to STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) by running its marine educational robotics project, EDUROVs, for the thirteenth consecutive year. Currently in the teacher training phase, this initiative aims to bring science and technology closer to the school environment through the construction of remotely operated vessels.
During the training sessions, teachers gain practical knowledge in marine robotics, 3D design and printing, programming with open-source software and hardware, and the use of mobile applications to control the vessels. These skills are essential for enabling them to guide their students in developing functional prototypes, thereby promoting active learning and technological thinking.
José Juan Gil, technologist at PLOCAN and lead trainer, emphasised that “teacher training is key to the project’s successful implementation in classrooms, where students are introduced to robotics through hands-on and creative activities.”
EDUROVs not only fosters technological skills but also promotes fundamental values such as environmental respect and the sustainable use of the marine environment. Students work with accessible materials and open technologies while applying computational thinking and creativity.
Each participating school will develop its own vessels, controlled via Arduino boards. These prototypes will be showcased at a final event held at PLOCAN’s facilities at the end of the school year.
At this event, students will have the opportunity to test the buoyancy and operability of their vessels using a mobile app specifically designed for their control. They will also be able to share experiences with peers and delve deeper into the research activities carried out by PLOCAN.
The EDUROVs project is supported by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, the Department for the Promotion of Scientific Vocations and Creativity (STEAM) of the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activities and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, and PLOCAN. This year’s edition involves seventeen public schools, engaging hundreds of students in an educational experience that blends technology, creativity, and sustainability.
With initiatives like EDUROVs, PLOCAN strengthens its commitment to scientific education from an early age, inspiring vocations in technical and scientific disciplines essential for the sustainable development of the Canary Islands archipelago.
