The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) once again took part in Macaronight 2025, the European Researchers’ Night of Macaronesia, held at the Elder Museum of Science and Technology in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The event brought together researchers and students from educational centres with the aim of bringing science and technology closer to new generations, particularly primary school pupils.

During the day, PLOCAN presented four activities that generated great interest among the schoolchildren. The H2Verde and EDUROVs projects demonstrated live how green hydrogen is produced, highlighting the potential of this renewable energy source in the transition towards a more sustainable future. EDUSEN invited participants to observe the presence of plankton in seawater, an experience that revealed the importance of these microscopic organisms in maintaining the balance of ocean ecosystems. PERSEO, meanwhile, explained how underwater gliders operate and their relevance in studying marine pollution, emphasising the usefulness of these technologies for research and marine environmental protection. Finally, Pure Wind conducted an interactive talk on ocean noise pollution, in which attendees could listen to the sounds produced by different marine species and reflect on the impact of human-generated noise.

Through this participation, PLOCAN reaffirms its commitment to scientific outreach and marine education, bringing the challenges and solutions promoted by ocean research closer to the school community.
The H2VERDE project is funded through a direct grant on grounds of public, social, and economic interest, to cover investment expenses for the project entitled “Renewable Energy and Hydrogen”, under Investment 1 of Component 17 (Complementary R&D+i Plans with the Autonomous Communities) of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) of the Government of Spain, financed with “Next Generation EU” funds, through the so-called Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR).
The EDUROVs project is implemented with the collaboration of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the Area for the Promotion of Scientific Vocations and Creativity (STEAM) of the Directorate General for Organisation, Innovation and Quality of the CEUCD of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
The EDUSEN project is implemented in collaboration with the Department of Education and Youth of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.
The PERSEO project is funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the Spanish State Research Agency (10.13039/501100011033), as well as by the European Union under the EU Next Generation Recovery Plan and Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR).
The PURE WIND project is funded by the Joint Programming Initiative for Oceans (JPI Oceans) of the European Union, with reference PCI2022-135007-2/MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR.
