The project “Marine Sensors – From Classroom to Congress (EduSen)” aims to promote ocean literacy among secondary school students in Gran Canaria, facilitating a deeper understanding of the importance of the ocean and its essential oceanographic variables. Aimed at 250 students and 15 teachers from 10 schools on the island, the project includes practical activities such as the construction of ocean sensors, field trips and scientific documentation. Several phases will be developed, starting with the drafting of baseline and legal documents, creation of communication materials, and teacher training in basic oceanography and research skills.
Students will participate in theoretical and practical sessions, assemble the PlanktoScope, collect data in the field and present their findings at a junior marine congress. The methodology is participatory and hands-on, actively involving students and teachers in all phases of the project, with the aim of increasing knowledge and understanding of the ocean, developing technical and scientific skills, and fostering pro- environmental attitudes and behaviours.
With a total estimated budget of €27,155, the project aims to inspire new generations in the Canary Islands, promoting relevant and meaningful environmental education to contribute to the conservation and protection of ocean resources.
