The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands was present at the Gran Canaria Climate and Energy Exhibition, which marked the closing of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy Programme. The event, held at IES Santa Brígida, was attended by 400 students from ten educational centres in six municipalities of Gran Canaria.
During the event, students actively participated in a workshop on renewable energies, where they explored in a practical way how sustainable technologies work and their positive impact on the environment. In addition, energy storage was addressed as the key missing piece in the energy transition puzzle, highlighting its fundamental role in ensuring the efficient and continuous use of clean energy. Through interactive dynamics, students were able to experiment with concepts such as energy generation and storage, promoting a deeper understanding of the energy transition and its importance for a sustainable future.
This workshop, framed within the EDUROVs and Renewable Energy and Hydrogen projects, aims to promote hands-on learning and disseminate key concepts on energy sustainability.Through these activities PLOCAN aims not only to inform, but also to inspire new generations, stimulating their interest in science and technology.
The Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Sustainable Energy is a programme of the European Commission, coordinated in Gran Canaria by the Island Energy Council (CIEGC), considered the world’s largest urban climate and energy initiative, which brings together thousands of local and regional authorities with a voluntary commitment to implement EU climate and energy objectives in their territories.
In Gran Canaria, it is subscribed by all the municipalities with the common objective of developing the implementation of renewable energies.
EDUROVs aims to build robots from low-cost materials, with free software and hardware, to bring students closer to science and technology in a practical way and stimulate professional vocations in the field of technology, and is funded by the Department of Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and PLOCAN.
The Renewable Energy and Hydrogen project is a project funded by the Government of the Canary Islands and financed under component 17 of the Spanish Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), financed with ‘Next Generation EU’ funds, through the so-called Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (RRM).
