The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) today hosted a meeting between representatives from the public sector of Caribbean countries, members of the French Center for Studies and Expertise on Risks, Environment, Mobility, and Urban Planning (CEREMA) and technology companies from the marine renewable energy sector.
The meeting is part of a study tour organized by the public agency Expertise France, aimed at strengthening the Caribbean’s capacities in the field of marine renewable energies. Participating countries included Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, and Barbados, as well as the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, and Saint Lucia.
This initiative is part of a training and international cooperation program that seeks to accelerate the energy transition in the Caribbean, taking successful experiences from insular contexts such as the Canary Islands as a reference.
Throughout the day, participants attended technical sessions and presentations of innovative case studies addressing key technologies for the energy transition in island environments.
Highlighted projects included the W2Power techonology, developed by Enerocean and focused on floating wind energy; Aquawind project, promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands to explore hybrid and multi-use systems; Plotec, by Global OTEC, centered on ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC); Ocean Oasis, which develops desalination solutions using wave energy; H2Green, coordinated and executed by PLOCAN and dedicated to offshore green hydrogen production; the Shy Project, by Wavepiston, specialized in wave energy; and the Boost Project, by Ocean Sun, promoting floating photovoltaic solar energy.
The Caribbean delegation also shared their own case studies and experiences, fostering knowledge exchange and the identification of synergies with European actors in the sector. This collaboration strengthens the ties between both regions and contributes to identifying solutions tailored to the Caribbean’s energy challenges.
The meeting concluded with a networking session, consolidating the commitment to cooperation between the Caribbean and the Canary Islands in the development of marine renewable energies.
