PLOCAN Strengthens its Role in Ocean Research at EMSO Strategic Workshop 2025

The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) is participating this week in the EMSO Strategic Workshop, a significant event for the European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water column Observatory (EMSO), where PLOCAN representatives are contributing their expertise in fundamental areas of ocean research.

Among them, Silvana Neves, also a member of EMSO’s Scientific Service Group and representative of the leader of EMSO’s Regional Facility for the Canary Islands, presented current and future research lines of the Canarian facility. Her intervention emphasized PLOCAN’s importance as a strategic node in the European marine observation network.

María Díaz, head of PLOCAN’s Data Department and member of EMSO’s Data Management Group, actively participated in sessions on data management and interoperability, making relevant contributions to EMSO’s strategic planning.

Additionally, Carlos Barrera, head of VIMAS at PLOCAN and member of EMSO’s Innovation and Industry Group, delivered a presentation titled ‘Autonomous Technologies for Real-Time Marine Observation’, discussing advancements in the use of intelligent underwater platforms for ocean monitoring.

The workshop also served as a platform to strengthen international collaborations, with the participation of researchers from Turkey and Ukraine, exploring future incorporations into the EMSO consortium.

“This event has been key to redefining EMSO’s role and consolidating its direction under renewed leadership. The foundations have been laid for stronger cooperation and research more aligned with current challenges,” stated Silvana Neves.

With this meeting, EMSO takes a firm step towards its future, advancing its mission of deep ocean observation and monitoring in Europe with a strengthened structure and a renewed visión.
