PLOCAN brings green hydrogen closer to the education community at Gran Canaria’s Climate and Sustainable Energy Fair

The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) took part in the Climate and Sustainable Energy Fair of Gran Canaria, an event held this week in Telde which marked the conclusion of the annual edition of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy programme. The event brought together nearly 300 participants, including students and teachers from educational centres, as well as representatives of public institutions and private entities committed to the energy transition and sustainability.

As part of the event, PLOCAN delivered an outreach workshop on green hydrogen production, aligned with the H2Verde and EDUROVs projects. The aim was to bring the education community and the general public closer to emerging technologies linked to marine renewable energies and new energy vectors. Using a practical and participatory approach, the workshop introduced the fundamentals of green hydrogen, its role in decarbonisation and its potential application in island and marine environments.

The Fair was consolidated as a space for learning, exchange and awareness-raising, showcasing the work carried out throughout the training programme, which has reached 10 educational centres and directly benefited 225 students and their teachers through specialised workshops.

The event was made possible thanks to the impetus of the Gran Canaria Island Energy Council (CIEGC) and the work of Trib-Arte, the organisation responsible for delivering the educational programme, as well as the support of CIFP Telde, the host centre of the Fair.

Through its participation in this Fair, PLOCAN strengthens its commitment to scientific outreach, training and social awareness in the field of clean energy, bringing innovation in green hydrogen and marine technologies closer to new generations and actively contributing to a more sustainable future for the Canary Islands.

The Renewable Energy and Hydrogen project, H2VERDE, is funded through a direct grant awarded for reasons of public, social and economic interest by the Government of the Canary Islands to the Consortium for the Design, Construction, Equipment and Operation of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN). The grant covers investment costs for the project entitled “Renewable Energy and Hydrogen” and is charged to Investment 1 of Component 17 (Complementary R&;D&I Plans with the Autonomous Communities) of the Spanish Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by “Next Generation EU” funds through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (MRR).

The EDUROVs project is implemented in collaboration with the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, the Area for the Promotion of Scientific Vocations and Creativity (STEAM) of the Directorate-General for Planning, Innovation and Quality of the CEUCD of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
