The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) has had an outstanding participation in the 2024 edition of Macaronight, an event held at the Elder Museum of Science and Technology, within the framework of the European Researchers’ Night, which aims to bring science closer to the public, especially to the youngest.
This year, PLOCAN offered three interactive activities that allowed attendees to immerse themselves in the interesting world of ocean research: generation of green hydrogen; dioramas and educational models; and a talk on underwater noise.
In the framework of the H2 GREEN project, PLOCAN organised a workshop focused on the generation of green hydrogen. This activity allowed participants to understand first-hand the processes and technologies involved in the production of this clean fuel, highlighting its importance in the energy transition.
One of the most interesting activities was the presentation of dioramas of the offshore platform and the glider laboratory, ingeniously constructed with Playmobil pieces. In addition, a glider model was exhibited to explain to the students the activities that PLOCAN carries out in these facilities. This initiative is part of the EDUROVs educational robotics project, which seeks to encourage scientific vocations among young people.
The third activity consisted of an interactive talk on underwater noise, where children had the opportunity to identify sounds emitted by marine mammals. This experience, part of the Pure Wind project, was not only entertaining, but also served to raise awareness of the importance of underwater acoustics in the study and conservation of marine ecosystems.
The event, organised by La Palma Research Centre (LPRC) and Big Van Ciencia, allowed PLOCAN to showcase some of its most relevant lines of research in an accessible and attractive way. PLOCAN’s participation in Macaronight 2024 reaffirms its commitment to scientific dissemination and the promotion of marine sciences among new generations.
PLOCAN would like to thank Águeda Inés Pérez Pulido for creating and lending us the dioramas for the educational activity.
The Renewable Energy and Hydrogen project is a project funded by the Government of the Canary Islands and financed under component 17 of the Spanish Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), financed with ‘Next Generation EU’ funds, through the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (RRM).
The EDUROVs project is implemented with the collaboration of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the Area for the Promotion of Scientific Vocations and Creativity (STEAM) of the General Directorate of Planning, Innovation and Quality of the CEUCD of the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
The Pure Wind project is funded by the EU NextGenerationEU, the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, and the State Research Agency.
