PLOCAN’s mission and its contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals was the focus of the participation of the Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructure in the Canary Islands Science and Innovation Weeks 2023.
Science plays a crucial role in maintaining a stable and sustainable economy, as well as in the development of countries. Despite its importance, citizens do not always have comprehensible access to scientific and technological advances and how they contribute to improving the quality of life. In order to address this gap, the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) has designed a programme to bring science and its achievements closer to the non-specialist public.
During the Canary Islands Science and Innovation Weeks 2023, PLOCAN opened its doors to more than 200 students from 5 schools. The students had the opportunity not only to get to know the Platform’s land-based facilities, but also to participate in a workshop dedicated to renewable energies, within the framework of the EDUROVs project. This educational approach aims to inform as well as inspire the next generation by promoting understanding and appreciation of science and technology.
EDUROVs aims to build robots from low-cost materials, with free software and hardware, to bring students closer to science and technology in a practical way and stimulate professional vocations in the field of technology, and is funded by the Department of Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and PLOCAN.

The Science and Innovation Weeks in the Canary Islands are promoted by the Regional Ministry of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands through the Canary Islands Agency for Research, Innovation and the Information Society (ACIISI).
