The European project FLOTANT about an innovative and low cost floating offshore wind technology, hold a dissemination event at PLOCAN premisses, organisation which coordinates this European project composed of 17 institutions from 8 different countries.
FLOTANT has involved more than 130 people during more than 80.000 working hours, designing, modelling, and validating the solutions developed during the project, looking for a floating offshore wind solution, innovative and low cost, optimised for deep waters (100m-600m) and able to accommodate a 10+ MW wind turbine
Within the developments carried out by FLOTANT, we find the basic and conceptual engineering of a hybrid floating foundation made of concrete and polymer; composite mooring lines; lighter and cost-effective power cable; additivated materials with antifouling and anti-bite properties, and everything based on a simple design which allows to reduce the cost of deployment, operation and maintenance.
The European Commission launched the challenge of getting a green and cost-competitive energy, this consortium endorsed this challenge and thanks to the proposed solutions, important reductions up to 60% have achieved related to the costs of energy.
This dissemination event included the participation of Paul McEvoy form TFI; Juanjo de la Cuesta from Future Fibres; Marta Pérez from Aimplas; George Georgallis, Anastasia Moraiti and Konstantinos Grivas from Hellenic Cables; José Serna from Esteyco; Jordi Serrete from Innosea; Erik-Jan de Ridder from Marin; Lars Johanning and Philipp Thies from The University of Exeter; Henry Jeffrey from The University of Edinburgh and Sara Muñoz from Cobra. Together with well-recognised professionals, such as Maria Luisa Castaño from Ciemat; Wei He from Equinor; Louise Yeow from EDF; Tomás Romagosa from the AEE and Pablo Ruiz-Minguela from Tecnalia, who evaluated the FLOTANT’s innovations and the state of the art of the floating offshore wind sector.
The decarbonisation is an unstoppable process, in the ocean there are enormous amounts of energy, which have not been exploited yet in an efficient and sustainable way, but we are very close and PLOCAN will keep boosting the responsible use of the marine resources.
