Canarian Parliamentarians Explore PLOCAN’s Strategic Role in Advancing the Blue Economy and Marine Innovation

Members of the Committee on Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture of the Parliament of the Canary Islands expressed strong interest today in deepening their understanding of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands(PLOCAN), its infrastructure, services, and the marine-maritime scientific and technological research projects hosted by the institution.

During an institutional meeting held this morning at PLOCAN’s land-based headquarters in Taliarte, led by Migdalia Machín Tavío, Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture of the Canary Islands Government, and PLOCAN CEO José Joaquín Hernández Brito, parliamentarians gained firsthand insight into PLOCAN’s work as a leading hub in marine research and a strategic asset for sustainable development and the transition toward a Blue Economy in the Canary Islands.

“I thank the members of the Parliamentary Committee on Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture for their interest in learning about PLOCAN’s work, its projects, infrastructure, and laboratory, and CEO José Joaquín Hernández for enthusiastically explaining what this research center means for the Canary Islands,” stated Migdalia Machín.

The ministry added, “PLOCAN is a key reference in ocean observation and the development of sustainable technology. It is a unique enclave where scientific and natural talent converge to develop innovative and environmentally respectful technology.”

By touring the facilities and learning about its projects and services, political representatives confirmed that PLOCAN is an infrastructure that not only advances scientific knowledge but also accelerates innovation, economic development, and job creation in the marine and maritime sectors.

José Joaquín Hernández Brito explained, “We had the opportunity to present the over 60 projects PLOCAN is undertaking and highlight the opportunities emerging across the archipelago. The Canary Islands could become a testing ground for the Blue Economy in Europe, and PLOCAN-related activities will gain prominence in the coming years. We also discussed the challenges to address and the necessary development to create jobs, economic activity, and position the Canary Islands as a benchmark hub for the Blue Economy.”
