Annual meeting of the JERICO-S3 project for the creation of a European Infrastructure that will coordinate the coastal observatories.

The Canary Islands Oceanic Platform (PLOCAN) has participated in the annual meeting of the European consortium JERICO-S3 “Joint European Research Infrastructure of Coastal Observatories: Science, Service, Sustainability”, whose objective is to strengthen the current European network of coastal observatories through the creation of a European structured research infrastructure (JERICO-RI).

JERICO-S3 JERICO-S3 is a European project financed by the H2020 Framework Program of the European Commission under grant agreement No. 871153, with a duration of 48 months and the participation of thirty-nine partners belonging to seventeen countries, and its main objectives are to coordinate and improve the joint activities of coastal observatories, providing high-quality environmental data, facilitating easy access to the facilities for researchers and users, creating products and services, and supporting excellent marine coastal research to better respond to societal needs.

JERICO-Week 2023 took place in Rovinj, Croatia, from April 17 to 20, 2023, bringing together 65 participants. This event was organized by the Ruder Boskovic Institute (IRB), located in Rovinj. PLOCAN participates by leading the technological innovation activity, in coordination with other work packages of the project.

The activity is currently in its demonstration phase, in which an observation platform was installed based on new technologies that improve the multidisciplinary monitoring of marine-maritime ecosystems and incorporate automatic learning systems. This installation has been carried out in the area of the Luc Sur Mer (France), in the observatory called “English Channel Pilot SuperSite” and will be monitoring the bloom of marine phytoplankton for a period of approximately two months. The proper functioning of the platform, as well as of the learning systems, will facilitate its use in other observatories.
