Workshop at PLOCAN on opportunities to boost research excellence in the Canary Islands

The R&D project manager of the Investigation, Innovation and Information Society Canarian Agency (ACIISI), Javier Roo, opened at the facilities of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands a workshop on opportunities to boost research excellence in the Canary Islands.

This remote and on-site workshop welcomed Ana Hidalgo, manager at both the Spanish Council for Scientific Research and the National Contact Point for Horizon Europe, who presented the opportunities the WIDERA project offers (Widening participation and strengthening the European Research Area).

Horizon Europe provides actions to boost research excellence that help develop R&D in the least developed countries. These regions will be able to include themselves in research international projects, enhancing networking and access to research excellence.

Hidalgo also spoke about Horizon Europe goal to “increase participation and spread excellence” among the Widening Countries, those who present low performance in research and development, such as the Canary Islands. Cases of success were brought up and Hidalgo struck up conversations with different R&D Canarian representatives.

This event falls within the FORWARD project (Fostering research excellence in EU Outermost Regions), an initiative co-funded by the European Commission aiming to improve research excellence and the potential for innovation in the outermost regions in order to boost their participation in research and innovation projects funded by the EU and consequently ensure territorial development.
