The Ocean – The Chemistry of Life

Framed in the International Year of Chemistry, the initiative “The Ocean, the Chemistry of Life” seeks to expose, in a didactic and entertaining way, using a wide range of didactic, audiovisual and technological resources, the role that the Chemical Sciences have played in the knowledge we have today of the ocean and marine life and, likewise, to emphasise their vital importance – both today and in the future – to monitor the health of our seas, our atmosphere and life on our planet.

With this vision, the exhibition, aimed at secondary school students, high school students, university students and the general public, is complete in conceptual terms, serving both the Canary Islands and the rest of Spain, allowing the visitor to move, in a simple way, from fundamental theoretical concepts, basic to the understanding of the chemical processes that occur in the ocean, to being able to see, touch and understand through guided explanations, the instruments and equipment, both the usual and the latest generation for oceanographic research, among others, Its relationship with the origin of life and the environmental balance of the planet, to being able to see, touch and understand through guided explanations, the instruments and equipment, both the usual and the latest generation for oceanographic research, including three types of oceanographic buoys and three types of gliders (underwater gliders), among others.

The travelling exhibition “The Ocean, the Chemistry of Life” was an initiative of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN), with the collaboration of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) and the Canary Islands Institute of Marine Sciences (ICCM).
