REMEDIES 5.0: Integrated and People-Centred Waterfront Restoration for a Resilient European Blue Economy

REMEDIES 5.0 will drive the sustainable transformation of European coastal cities and ports through more than 20 integrated solutions across 13 sites. Through Living Labs, it will combine monitoring with artificial intelligence, nature-based restoration and circular blue economy models. The project will restore habitats, reduce pollutants, create circular value chains and facilitate their replication and investment.

Europe’s waterfront cities and ports face interconnected challenges of pollution, ecosystem degradation, and climate vulnerability, requiring a systemic transformation. REMEDIES 5.0 directly addresses the Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’ by demonstrating a powerful portfolio of over 20 integrated solutions across 13 diverse waterfront cities and ports in all four European sea and river basins.

Our approach is fundamentally place-based and people-centred. Through a network of Living Labs, we will co-create and deploy innovative solutions spanning AI-powered monitoring, nature-based restoration, and circular blue economy models. We will restore ≥8 ha vital habitats, validate advanced technologies for the removal of plastics and chemical pollutants, and establish new circular value chains that transform waste into resources.

The project will produce bankable Replication Blueprints, train over 60 professionals, and mobilise ≥€10 million in follow-on investment to ensure widespread uptake. By delivering measurable progress on ecosystem restoration, pollution elimination, and a circular blue economy, REMEDIES 5.0 provides a validated, scalable pathway to achieve the Mission’s objectives and create a lasting legacy of healthier, more resilient, and prosperous European waterfronts.
