REMAR: Opportunities for the Integration of Ocean Energy into Ibero-American Electricity Grids

The CYTED REMAR NETWORK (opportunities for integration of SEA energies in Ibero-American electricity grids) is an interdisciplinary network that includes experts in marine energies, but also in electricity grid analysis, power electronics and storage systems. It is led by CIEMAT (Spain) and is made up of 9 research organisations and 3 companies from 8 different countries in the Ibero-American region (Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, Peru, Portugal), which means a participation of approximately ≈75 researchers. The objective of the Network is the creation of a space made up of research organisations, universities and companies in the Ibero-American region, aimed at the exchange of professionals between institutions, cross-training between members, the development of multidisciplinary technical activities and the dissemination of activities and results, all with the common purpose of analysing and developing opportunities for the integration of marine energies in Ibero-American electricity grids.

Although there are global proposals on the integration of marine energy into the energy mix, this Thematic Network will focus on a number of new issues such as the impact on the electricity grid, existing constraints and solutions to increase the penetration limit of marine energy (e.g. the use of storage).

During the life of the Network, joint participation in proposals for funding R&D&I projects in the Ibero-American region will be encouraged, technological results will be published in international congresses and journals, open training seminars will be held and internships will be carried out between Network centres.

The results will be integrated into a freely accessible Technology Roadmap and an open database/repository will be developed with documentation, mathematical models and other material generated during the life of the Network.
