CIRCULAR OCEAN: Transitioning marine litter to a circular economy in the Eastern Mid-Atlantic

CIRCULAROCEAN promotes the transition of marine litter to a circular economy in the mid- eastern Atlantic. Coordinated by the Canary Islands Government, it involves regions like Azores, Madeira, and West African countries, developing sustainable strategies through knowledge transfer, pilot actions, waste management technologies, circular business models, and prevention in tourism, fishing, and ports, promoting recycling and valorization.

CIRCULAROCEAN is a territorial cooperation project that aims to transition marine litter towards a circular economy in the Eastern Mid-Atlantic through the use of synergies, resources, knowledge and shared capacities between regions. In this way, it aims to provide solutions to the enormous environmental challenge posed by marine litter under a circular economy approach, integrating it into the land-based treatment system and proposing new business models based on recycling and recovery.

The project is coordinated by the Directorate General for the Fight against Climate Change and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, in a consortium of 17 partners from the regions of the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the third countries of Cape Verde, Ghana and Sao Tome, with capacities and experience in the issues it addresses.

CIRCULAROCEAN is based on a collaborative, participatory and open process between the different regions involved to provide a common and sustainable strategy with a circular approach, where knowledge transfer activities, pilot and demonstration actions on the application of waste monitoring and management technologies, new circular business models, exchange of good practices and experiences in recycling and recovery, and prevention actions in activities with an impact on waste such as tourism, fishing or ports converge.
