The Director of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) attended the institutional event held at the Parliament of the Canary Islands in tribute to the scientist Blas Cabrera, whose career has inspired the creation of the Canary Islands Science Day.
The Parliament of the Canary Islands has promoted this new annual event, which will be celebrated every 10 December from this year onwards. The choice of date is no coincidence, as it marks the day when, 126 years ago, the Lanzarote-born physicist Blas Cabrera—one of the leading figures in early 20th-century Spanish science—delivered a historic lecture in the very chamber that today hosts parliamentary proceedings.
The event brought together representatives from the institutional, scientific and academic spheres, highlighting the enduring relevance of Cabrera’s legacy and his contribution to the development and international projection of science. This initiative aims to strengthen public recognition of research and to encourage scientific vocations across the Canary Islands.
The Director of PLOCAN stated: “Our presence at this event reaffirms the organisation’s commitment to promoting science, innovation and collaboration between institutions—key pillars in addressing global challenges such as climate change, the energy transition and the sustainable development of the oceans.”
Furthermore, PLOCAN’s participation in initiatives of this kind helps to raise awareness of the role of scientific and technical infrastructures in knowledge generation and technology transfer, reinforcing the Canary Islands’ position as a strategic hub for research and innovation.
Through its presence at this event, PLOCAN joins in recognising the legacy of Blas Cabrera and supports the consolidation of the Canary Islands Day of Science as a key annual milestone for fostering scientific culture across the archipelago.
