The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) is taking on the coordination of the Canary Islands Blue Schools Network, which is part of the Spanish Blue Schools Network and the Network of European Blue Schools. This new role reinforces the work PLOCAN has already been carrying out as a collaborating entity, promoting ocean literacy in the archipelago and connecting marine knowledge with the educational community.
The Network of European Blue Schools encourages students’ engagement with the marine environment through projects, activities and ocean-related experiences. In Spain, its development is structured through the Spanish Blue Schools Network, which is responsible for training, support, activity evaluation and regional coordination.
As the coordinating entity in the Canary Islands, PLOCAN strengthens the participation of educational centres, the connection with scientific institutions and social stakeholders, and the creation of innovative projects that bring marine science and technology closer to students—further consolidating its collaboration with the national and European networks.
Its extensive experience in scientific cooperation and educational initiatives—such as EduBlue, EduSen and EDUROV—has significantly contributed to the growth of the Blue Schools Network in the region. Thanks to this ongoing work, in the most recent European Blue Schools certification call, several schools in Gran Canaria received international recognition: seven through EduBlue and four through EduSen.
With this new stage, PLOCAN reaffirms its commitment to ocean education and to fostering a society that is more aware of the value of the ocean, providing resources, support and educational initiatives that strengthen the Blue Schools Network across the archipelago.
