PLOCAN participates in the European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference EWTEC 2025 in Madeira

A delegation from PLOCAN, led by Joaquín Hernández Brito, is taking part this week in the 16th European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference (EWTEC 2025), held from 7 to 11 September in Funchal, Madeira. After hosting previous editions in Lisbon (1995) and Porto (2007), the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IDMEC) and Instituto Superior Técnico are organizing this international event, which brings together the scientific, technical and industrial community in the field of marine renewable energy. EWTEC has become one of the most relevant global forums for research and development in ocean energy technologies. During the conference, PLOCAN is focusing its contribution on showcasing progress within the MARINERG-i_PP and SHY projects.

In this context, PLOCAN will take part in the MARINERG-i_PP workshop, a side event of EWTEC 2025 entitled “Advancing Research Infrastructure Services and International Collaboration”, to be held on 10 September. This session will explore the future of integrated European research infrastructures for marine renewable energy, highlighting access to testing facilities and e-infrastructures, while fostering an open discussion on common challenges faced by the sector.

In the case of SHY – Seawater Hydraulic PTO Using Dynamic Passive Controller for Wave Energy Converters, the project will have a strong presence at EWTEC 2025, with four presentations from consortium partners showcasing the main results and technological advances achieved so far. Among them, PLOCAN is contributing to the validation of the Wavepiston wave energy technology at its open-water facilities, a key step to demonstrate its applicability in real conditions. The project is helping to drive more efficient and sustainable wave energy conversion while fostering new opportunities for international collaboration in marine renewable energy.

For the Canary Islands’ research infrastructure, EWTEC 2025 represents a strategic platform not only to present ongoing project results but also to build future partnerships with research centers, technology developers, and European institutions committed to the energy transition and the sustainable use of the oceans.
