PLOCAN joins the Pact for the Dissemination of Science and Innovation in the Canary Islands

The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) has joined the Pact for the Dissemination of Science and Innovation in the Canary Islands, an initiative promoted by the Regional Ministry of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canary Islands Agency for Research, Innovation and the Information Society (ACIISI), with the aim of establishing a stable framework for collaboration that strengthens the scientific culture in the Archipelago.

PLOCAN’s director, José Joaquín Hernández Brito, attended yesterday’s presentation of the Pact, held at the Elder Museum of Science and Technology as part of the 2025 Science and Innovation Weeks in the Canary Islands, together with institutional representatives, universities, research centres, social entities, technology companies and science communication stakeholders.

“For PLOCAN, joining this Pact means reinforcing our commitment to open, participatory science that is closely connected to Canarian society. We work in the ocean, but our knowledge is meant to reach classrooms, families and all citizens,” Hernández Brito stated.

He also noted that “the Pact provides us with a common framework to pool efforts, share resources and design joint strategies that make the work of the Canarian scientific community more visible and, in particular, highlight the importance of the marine environment for the present and future of the islands,” added PLOCAN’s director.

The Pact for the Dissemination of Science and Innovation is born aligned with the Canary Islands Science Law and with the ambition of promoting a more informed and participatory society, better connected to its research talent. The text proposes a way of relating to science that is “closer and more present in everyday life,” as underlined by the Regional Minister for Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture, Migdalia Machín, during the event.

The Regional Minister stressed that dissemination must become a permanent pillar of science policy in the Canary Islands and recalled that “science, if it is not communicated, fades; and innovation, if it is not shared, stalls,” highlighting the importance of bringing institutions, research centres, public administrations, companies and citizens together in this alliance for knowledge.
