The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) participated in the CANASAR 2025 exercise, an air accident simulation coordinated by the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre of the Canary Islands (ARCC) of the Spanish Air and Space Force. The exercise took place on June 19 south of Gran Canaria and involved the simulation of two incidents: the first, an air accident at sea approximately 80 kilometres south of the island; and the second, on land.
PLOCAN contributed to the maritime operation by providing tools and technological capabilities for ocean observation and forecasting. Numerical model data on surface currents and drift predictions were made available to support search and rescue efforts in the area of the simulated accident. In addition, two PLOCAN drifting buoys, attached to figurative objects, were deployed to monitor real-time ocean current behaviour throughout the exercise. This information proved highly valuable in supporting operational decision-making, helping to identify priority search areas and optimize response times.
PLOCAN’s participation in CANASAR 2025 underscores its commitment to safety and inter-institutional cooperation in real operational environments, making its capabilities available to enhance emergency response in the marine domain.
