The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) took part in FIMAR 2026, the International Sea Fair, held from 22 to 24 May at Muelle Sanapú in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. PLOCAN hosted an outreach stand designed to bring its work in marine research, innovation and ocean technology closer to the public, schools, institutional delegations and sector professionals.
Over the three-day event, PLOCAN’s space showcased initiatives related to ocean observation, the blue economy, ocean education and the development of marine technologies applied to ocean knowledge and protection. Through outreach materials, visual resources and equipment demonstrations, visitors had the opportunity to learn more about part of the organisation’s work from the Canary Islands to the Atlantic.
PLOCAN’s presence at FIMAR reinforced the role of science communication as a tool to connect research, innovation and society. The stand also served as a meeting point for students, citizens and marine-maritime stakeholders interested in the professional and technological opportunities linked to the blue economy.
As part of the fair, Jorge Rapp Cabrera took part in the talk “The Blue Triangle: learning, innovating and creating the future from the Canary Islands”, a session focused on the connection between education, innovation and the market, and on the role of talent and scientific-technological infrastructures in creating new ocean-related opportunities.
Through this participation, PLOCAN continues to promote ocean culture in the Canary Islands and strengthens its commitment to open, participatory science communication aligned with the archipelago’s sustainability, innovation and blue transition challenges.
