The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) has obtained certification under Spain’s National Security Framework (ENS) — a significant achievement that strengthens its commitment to information protection, technological resilience, and responsible management of digital systems.
Obtaining the ENS certification represents an important milestone, as only a limited number of Spain’s Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructures (ICTS) hold this accreditation. Among them is the Supercomputing Center, positioning PLOCAN among the country’s leading institutions that ensure the security, integrity, and resilience of their information systems in accordance with ENS standards.
This certification confirms that PLOCAN meets the stringent requirements established by national regulations on information security, ensuring the integrity, confidentiality, availability, and traceability of the data it manages.
This accomplishment positions PLOCAN as a national reference in information security and digital resilience within the ICTS network, reaffirming its commitment to excellence and trust in the management of its technological systems.
“Achieving this certification has been possible thanks to the joint effort of the entire organization and the implementation of a robust cybersecurity strategy that strengthens our protection against digital threats,” said Alfredo Sosa, Head of PLOCAN’s ICT Department.
Among the main measures implemented are multi-factor authentication (MFA) to enhance secure access; the adoption of a Zero Trust architecture that continuously verifies identities and limits access; and constant system monitoring using intrusion detection and prevention tools (IDS/IPS).
Additionally, PLOCAN has advanced in network segmentation and security through advanced firewalls and VLANs, strengthened data governance and access control in cloud and hybrid environments, and updated its internal policies and regulations in alignment with ENS requirements.
All these efforts are complemented by business continuity, backup, and incident recovery plans, as well as ongoing staff training and awareness programs in cybersecurity.
The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) is a national scientific and technical infrastructure that provides services to research, development, and innovation projects in the marine and maritime domains. Its mission is to promote the sustainable use of the ocean by supporting science, technology, and collaboration between public and private institutions.
