Juan Cruz Cigudosa highlights the “strategic role” of PLOCAN in the transition towards a Blue and sustainable Economy

The Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Universities, Juan Cruz Cigudosa, held a meeting today with representatives of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) at the organization’s onshore headquarters, where he was able to learn first-hand about the facilities and services of this internationally recognized center for sustainable marine solutions.

During the meeting, PLOCAN’s director, José Joaquín Hernández Brito, presented the platform as a unique space and a “laboratory” for research and technological development in the oceanic environment.

Among the fields of activity hosted by this ICTS are, among others, marine renewable energies-offshore wind, green hydrogen, and floating solar power-advanced aquaculture, robotics and autonomous vehicles, as well as projects in marine biotechnology, acoustic research, maritime safety, and artificial intelligence applications in the marine environment.

Throughout its history, PLOCAN has served as a magnet for more than 500 institutions, thanks to its cutting-edge infrastructure, the possibility of conducting trials year-round, and its strategic location in deep waters close to the coast. Its operational model also enables it to offer high-quality services and attract talent and investment from across Europe.

During the meeting, the future challenges for PLOCAN were analyzed. The Secretary of State emphasized the strategic role of PLOCAN in the transition towards a Blue and sustainable Economy.

Both parties at the meeting committed to continue working to consolidate PLOCAN as an accelerator for marine technologies and an international benchmark in oceanic innovation, contributing to sustainable development, the creation of skilled employment, and the competitiveness of the Canary Islands and Spain in the field of the Blue Economy.
