Gorona del Viento, PLOCAN, and the University of La Laguna collaborate on wave energy research at El Hierro

Gorona del Viento El Hierro, the University of La Laguna and the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands have signed a collaboration agreement in order to develop a project for promoting the wave energy capture research at El Hierro.

The agreement was signed by Belén Allende, President of Gorona del Viento; Francisco Almeyda, Vice-Chancellor for Research of the University of La Laguna; and Octavio Llinás, Director of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands.

After signing the agreement, Allende pointed out that “the continued effort made by Gorona del Viento in renewable energy research has geographically placed El Hierro at the scientific and technological forefront of the clean resources sector. This agreement will allow to extend this effort to the exploitation of the marine resources of the island”.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed his satisfaction with this agreement because it is a new successful example of collaboration between the University of La Laguna and a State enterprise and an “attempt to exploit one of the greatest renewable energy resources that we have in the Canary Islands, the wave energy, and we hope that the results obtained with this experience wiil be highly positive, with the possibility of generalising and extrapolating them for other Archipelago areas”.

The Director of PLOCAN, Octavio Llinás, pointed out that “our objective is to mobilise the technological developments in the Canary Islands, in this situation the University of La Laguna, in order to promote the conversion of maritime marine technical scientific knowledge of excellence into sustainable socio-economic activity and to speed up the process of turning the university knowledge into industrial reality and economic value”.
