The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands participated in the 13th edition of the International Marine Fair, held at the Sanapú dock in the port of Las Palmas, which attracted more than 15,000 visitors, as it is an event that brings together important sectors of the blue economy, nautical sport, research and science.
At the PLOCAN stand, visitors were able to learn about the EDUROVs and Renewable Energy and Hydrogen projects. The EDUROVS project aims to bring students closer to marine science and technology, stimulating professional vocations in these fields. Through practical activities, students discover the world of underwater robotics and its application in marine research.
The educational activities of the Renewable Energy and Hydrogen project focus on teaching the importance of storing energy from renewable sources to ensure a constant supply of electricity. Visitors were able to learn about the process of electrolysis and how electrical energy is used to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen. When this electricity comes from renewable sources, the hydrogen produced is called “green hydrogen”. This method is clean and sustainable, as it does not emit carbon dioxide, thus contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases and supporting the transition to a more sustainable economy.
The EDUROVs project is implemented with the collaboration of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the Area for the Promotion of Scientific Vocations and Creativity (STEAM) of the Directorate General for Organisation, Innovation and Quality of the CEUCD of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
The Renewable Energy and Hydrogen project is funded by the Government of the Canary Islands and financed under component 17 of the Spanish Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), financed with “Next Generation EU” funds, through the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (RRM).
FIMAR is promoted by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Port Authority of Las Palmas, and organised by the city’s Department of Ciudad de Mar and the Canary Islands Trade Fair Institution.
