PLOCAN participated in a talk on ocean restoration at a scientific outreach event organized by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC), with the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and the Union of Merchants of the Principality of Asturias, as part of the Mareona Oceanographic project.
The main aim of the talk was to bring the objectives of the European Union’s Mission Restore Our Oceans and Waters closer to the public, an ambitious initiative striving to restore marine ecosystem health by 2030.
The talk took place at the Integrated Municipal Center in the El Llano neighborhood of Gijón and was attended by residents interested in learning more about oceanographic research and its importance in protecting our oceans.
During the presentation, the objectives and activities of the BlueMissionAA project were introduced, an initiative seeking to drive the restoration and conservation of marine ecosystems through science and innovation. The advancements and achievements in ocean restoration were highlighted, as well as the importance of public participation in these efforts. Additionally, a series of restoration initiatives and solutions being gathered by the BlueMissionAA project to foster an innovative framework to meet the EU Mission’s objectives were presented. These solutions range from ecosystem monitoring and evaluation technologies to nature-based restoration techniques.
The talk, characterized by its clear and accessible language, was followed by a debate and an exchange of ideas among the numerous attendees, enabling an open and enriching dialogue on the importance of marine environment protection.
“Events like this are fundamental in bringing science to society and raising public awareness about the importance of ocean restoration for the future of our planet,” stated Tania Montoto, project manager of BlueMissionAA at PLOCAN, who delivered the talk.
BlueMissionAA’s participation in this scientific outreach event is part of the project’s and PLOCAN’s efforts to promote environmental awareness and public participation in protecting our oceans. Through outreach and education, BlueMissionAA aims to inspire local communities to engage in the restoration of marine ecosystems and take concrete actions to preserve ocean health and achieve the ambitious goals of the EU Mission.
