GROOM: Gliders for Research, Ocean Observation and Management

Underwater gliders are smart and affordable platforms useful for long-term multi-parameter marine observation. Thanks to their remotely controlled navigation capabilities and the high spatial and temporal resolution of their real-time measurements, gliders have been identified to fill gaps in existing ocean observing systems. Along with their rapidly increasing importance in purely scientific applications, the application of gliders in the Global Ocean Observing System has been recognised as a key point for improving the observing capabilities of the observing systems.

The objective of the GROOM proposal is the design of a new European research infrastructure for the use of underwater gliders for the benefit of European citizens, researchers and industry. GROOM will define the scientific, technological and organisational/legal levels of a European glider infrastructure for sustained ocean research and observation, in line with European and international initiatives for in-situ marine observation.

The proposal for this new infrastructure is based on the emerging EuroARGO and JERICO infrastructures and also takes into consideration relevant international coordination bodies such as GOOS. The proposed technology infrastructure will be based on several dedicated gliderports to maintain and operate a European glider fleet in coordination with the United States, Canada, Australia and other similar infrastructures. This new infrastructure will benefit both oceanographic research and the operational oceanography systems on which a large number of marine activities and societal applications currently rely.
